I just thought I might as well make a brief, public statement about this as a lot of people have been emailing and asking me about it lately.
*ahem*
The second and third books of the trilogy should be coming out fairly quickly, considering how long they are and the fact that I'm fairly obsessive when it comes to my writing. That means book two should be out about two years from now. Book three will be a year or so after that.
Why so long? / I thought I read somewhere that you already had the second two books written?
The trilogy is already written all the way through to the end, but there is still some editorial work to be done. I want the second one to be at least as good as the first, if not better. That takes time.
I know that on the reader's side, a year seems like a long time. It always used to piss me off, having to wait for my favorite authors to write new stuff. But now that I'm on the other side I know why it takes so long. There's a ton of behind-the-scenes work that has to happen: Editing, re-editing, shipping, cover design, printing, layout, more editing. It all takes time.
In order to make the wait marginally less painful, I'm going to be putting up new content on the website in addition to continuing the blogs. Some of the things I'm considering include:
Which of these sounds best to you? Give it a little discussion in the comments below. Suggestions for other improvements are also welcome....

- Getting a forum up and running.

- Posting deleted scenes/chapters from book one.
- Posting teaser chapters from book two.

I would totally go for deleted scenes. I mean, there's no downside! You just get more book to read.
As an aspiring writer, the wait allows me to re-read book one and ask more questions (hee hee). Well, fair enough. The most enticing to me: World Map, Beastiary, Lute (all things visual, I guess). But would also like to see a stable Forum. The deleted scenes and teaser chapters I can wait for, because I'm still savoring the first book.
And somehow, you are still keeping up your day job? Grin.
One suggestion: Apothecary page, if you are so inspired and could find an artist or are one! btw: willow, my foot! A lovely breadth of herbs and their use!
Can I say "all of the above"? I think the Forum idea is great, as it gives us all a place to commiserate until the next book comes out. And I would love some teaser chapters to help tide me over.
Can I put in a plug for no teaser chapters. I try to avoid teaser chapters because they just make the wait unbearable. I'd rather have the whole thing - BAM - all at once.
I'm all about the clickable content on the map and the bestiary. And I think the Apothecary page is a great idea too.
Yeah, a forum would pretty much rule.
I want "all of the above" too. :)
I guess if I'd had to pick, I'd say, in this order:
- The forums (I assume your webmaster knows how to set them up? If not, I have a lot of experience with forums and would be happy to help).
- The FAQ (preferably with lots of you talking about the way you write, which I always love to read).
- Deleted scenes and book two chapters (in the same order, since it's basically the same thing: more story content!).
I purchased your book yesterday afternoon. I saw on Barnes and Noble that it was highly recommended and well reviewed. I finished reading it at two o'clock this morning. Bad idea starting it in the middle of the week, wouldn't you say? That's what happens with me and an impressive new book, I tend to disappear from life for a few hours while I explore this interesting new place. Anyhow, in response to your blog, I'm wishing I'd waited to read this until closer to the 2nd book release date. I'm now completely invested in this new place and anxiously willing to devour any and all information:) So, short answer, all of the above!
Since you're asking, I'd love to see more complete maps. For example, where is Newarre? or the Wydeconte Hills? or Trebon? Deleated scenes and teasers from upcoming books are always a wonderful treat, too! FAQ are also great - like an explanation of the calendar cycles and what the names of the days mean.
Oh, deleted scenes, DELETED SCENES. Definitely. It gives more insight into the characters and the story.
More detailed sub-maps are also in the works. I'm going to do one of the Commonwealth, one of the Shald, etc etc.
Forget about book two, i live in Scotland and will not be able to buy the first book until 20/09/2007!
I would agree with the above commments saying "GIVE US EVERYTHING!" heh. Of course it also depends on how much time you have to dedicate to it.
Thanks for the great interview Pat. It should be coming up next week.
Personally, i would like to see the map, forum and beastiary options. Then deleted scenes and FAQ. Teasers are not really my thing.
I think a forum would be a great idea! I also like the idea of more fleshed out maps and a FAQ. Your book seems to be the next BIG thing, and when I say BIG I mean large.
Cheers,
Troll
A Fishery would be instructive; or a related alchemy page. (am going to get myself banned shortly, if I don't stop adding ideas...)
i thirteenth (just a guess - didn't count) the idea of the forum. fanboys and girls need a place to kvetch, away from the eyes of the rest of the secret-reading world.
i'm not a writer, but my guess is that deleted scenes are, more often than not, deleted for a reason. then again, plenty of authors release unabridged versions that end up enhancing the story, so...motivated by my own greed and the dismal prospect of waiting a whole year for new material, i am decided. more!
i'm with adam on the teasers, though. sometimes just a little is worse than nothing.
Well, since all three are already written, why not just have teasers about your next book? I have the feeling you are bursting with ideas.
I'd love to see deleted scenes. Teaser chapters, not so sure as I'm not overly fond of 'spoilers'. A section on herbs and their uses, alchemical reactions, use of magic in general would be really cool. More maps and the bestiary would also be a plus.
I'm wondering if, like Stephen King's "The Stand", you might eventually come out with the full-length version? I mean, what's another 300 - 400 pages if it gives us some more of this world to explore?
My vote is for teaser chapters. It took my husband 3 weeks to finish this book and he recommended I pick it up for almost a week before I relented and started. I finished in 3 days, neglecting my family and sleep until I finished. I was hoping for mid-year release of #2, but hubby reminded me that publishers like to make sure they have showing on the bestseller lists and time releases accordingly (grrrr). At least I have hope of getting the whole story, unlike some other unmentionable authors. Thanks for a great read!
Definitely deleted scenes. As tycho said its like more book to read. I mean, just because the publisher wanted a shorter book(etc), doesn't mean the writing is subpar(gasp) or less engaging.
And i don't like spoilers-anyway you have to wait much longer for the whole thing, so too much added suspense just increases the severity of the inevitable nervous breakdown.
My vote is for all of them. But I'm greedy.
Joy! Joy! Joy! I do not normally carry my current reading passion with me...but you are the exception! Due to a crazy schedule and even crazier demands upon my free time, I literally have to steal moments to continue reading this exotic blend of fantasy. I vote yes to almost all of the above. No on the teasers (though I may change my mind once I've finished your book).
Thank you for the multi-faceted character Qvothe!
can we convince you to make it 10 months???
puhleeez
coytotej
oh yesyesyesyes!
If I had to choose, I'd go with the forum and the deleted scenes/chapters.
So, this is a very late response, as i just discovered both book and blog, but I'd like to vote for All of the Above, with the addition of the apothecary page suggested by one of the other commenters.
Love the book, chomping at the bit for more!
Deleted scenes sounds great. If we have to wait a year we mind as well reminisce, and have it be filled in completely. Im so damn excited though. I have to say that this IS the best book ive ever read, and theres so many unanswered questions that are going to be answered. Such as book II coming out next year. Woo!!!
since you asked...i would absolutely love an audio component...perhaps you can hook up with a musician for some lovely lute??
There is some audio on the page already. It's under "the world" tab.
pat
i would prefer deleted stuff rather than teasers from the next book. i will wait for the next book.
love the idea of the bestiary and map expansions.
i would also love to hear about what you will write when this series is all published.
Beastiary,
More clickable sections on map.
As a devoted tolkien geek, I love obscure details about anything involving Middle Earth.
Your world has the same pull and I find it deepens the feeling of reality if there are enormous amounts of trivial details. I know not everyone would agree, but if you have any tidbits of weird data, names of streams, the names of the week, months etc. I Love this kind of stuff. So I vote for a Flotsam and Jetsam page of details you have pulled from the books but still have around.

Pat,
Thank you for letting us into your new and fantastic world. I have been reading for over 46 years and your world is one of the best I have encountered. Bravo! I hope to continue alone the trail as you let us explore with you and learn more. I am sure your troupe will expand and become a major force in this world.
I hope you make it to Mysterious Galaxy in San Diego one day.

Definitely deleted scenes/chapters before anything else. I need more Name of the Wind in my life! The only upside to such a long wait is that I can fit in a few more re-readings between now and April.
I'm reading the book now. That's all I do, all I can think about... I'm totally hooked. It's well written and so exciting that I'm afraid I'm reading it too fast!
Still, I wouldn't want any teasers from book 2. I'd rather wait and savor the book when it's out.
I'd like the deleted scenes from book 1 though! That would be fun!
Thanks!
I am depressed...just finished the book for the second time and still the next one is a year ahead...
Dang, a young lady I just spent time with said to me that she wasn't much into sequels, but, not me, where is that sequel? I need it now.
eh, I wouldn't post ANY book content. Just stay in touch with your fans, thats what keeps me happy.
Short snippets of the book and artwork are .. great .. but I really don't care about them. What I want is for you to get book 2 out ASAP!
I Just Know you really meant Fall of 07. That must be correct. Whew. Kvit teasing and Kvorting and give us KVOTHE. We Need New CONTENT.(I respect the time required to make book two as infectious as book one, but have begun to fidget and paw at the cover)
I Vote for Deleted scenes, More Backround, A pamphlet sized Prequel or Filler or... Book #1.5... yea book one point five .
Half of book 2 NOW at full cost...Publishers happy, Me happy You happy,
Sincerly,
Sitting at the bar..eyeing Kvothe and the blade above the bar..

AAARRRGGGHHH! It said "A Novel" so i began one of the best journeys of my life, only to become more and more alarmed as i read further, helplessly drawn
deeper and deeper into Kvothe's world, that this was either going to be a cop out ending( which would be criminal) or, (AAARRRGGGHHH) the first book of a series. The latter being the awful truth, I wept, gnashed my teeth and i have now only half a head of hair....Desperate for news of the next book, i turn on my laptop, at 4am,to see if i can discover when i could expect my (almost instantaneous) craving for more, more, more, to be fed...A YEAR..... So, here i am now, no hair, teeth worn to the gums and suffering withdrawal akin to an addict starved of a fix....Yet simultaneously elated and giddy with the knowledge that there WILL be more to come...I love the world you have given us a glimpse into, so new and fresh and intrigueing. I am as helpless as a sweet-eater, hooked at the first taste....
yours addictedly

I would just like to say that you should feel free to take your time, enjoy the revising and finishing touches to your hearts content. You shouldnt rush the way words are put down or said. Enjoy yourself and come out with the book when its ready.
I would prefer none of the above. In fact, I would prefer you take down the blog, stop wasting time here, and write. I don't want you to become another George R.R. Martin or Robert Jordan. For your reader's sake, WRITE!

Firstly I would like to commend you on the best book I've ever read. I would love to read the deleted chapters and cast ma mince pies over teasers from the new book. twould be a joy. May I also suggest an oblivion style game and a Peter Jackson directed movie!!!!
I'd like to add that in scotland we have a pretty large part of the population who have red hair. I've never wanted to be a ging... until now!! damn you!!!
I can't wait. I just read, a week or two ago, The Name of the Wind and it was easily, in terms of new authors, comparable to Lynch, Sanderson, and Campbell in being uniquely different, engrossing, and entertaining.
Take your time. Two years seems the norm, sadly :( But I'd rather you DON'T fall into the Sophmore Slump :)
Pat...I would really love a pronunciation guide to some of the names and locations in the book.
All right. I just wanted to say how much I loved the first book. I have faith that you'll get book two out when you're ready. I've tried to spread your name out a bit because I truly think it's worth it to have read. Such good characters! I love every detail of it. I also check to see if there is any new information about book two fairly often because I can't get it off my mind. Thank you so much.
oHey, loved the book. Best book ive read in a long time. It is right up there with David Gemmell. Well done keep up the great work. Hope to read your new book soon.
Can I just take this oppurtunity to say WHY?
WHY WHY WHY?
Ask to " 'Why' what?", why not just...
Oh, I don't know.
I'm impatient.
I just finished reading 'The Name of The Wind'. And I desperately want more book.
Kvothe has awesome hair. I cannot stress this fact enough.
I've recommended it to every person I know who has the capacity to understand the (relatively simple) idea of sympathy.
When Bast said "I just want my Reshi back." I, without thought or realisation, replied "So do I, Bast."
Oops.
Away from that, though, I have to say that if book two is rushed in any manner, I'll be unhappy. I don't really care if it takes until 2050, to be honest, if the quality is even half as high as book one.
Oh, and I can't thank you enough for the week-long, no-sleep, never-put-it-down read.
