Various and sundry items

It seems like I have a half-hundred little things I want to write about, but not enough time to do any of them justice.

So today you get a hodgepodge of miscellany. A hodgelany. If my regular blogs are nutritiously balanced meals, served with an eye for presentation... well... then this blog is going to be more like you coming over to my house and eating fish sticks directly off the cookie sheet while sitting on my couch. Tasty, but strictly no-frills.

Item 1) What I dressed up for this Halloween.

Gay Dumbledore.

If you hadn't already heard the news, crawl out from under your rock and look HERE.

"Ah yes," Dumbledore thought to himself. "That young Potter is a lovely bit of crumpet if I've ever seen one. I wonder if he'd fall for the old 'pull something out of my hat' routine...."

"Five points for Gryffindor!"

My accomplice in the photos is none other than my lovely ladyfriend, Sarah. It really wouldn't have been a funny costume if I hadn't been able to chase her around the party all night, groping shamelessly by the punchbowl and occasionally making suggestions that would make a fanfic author blush.

Item 2) Name of the Wind just made Publisher's Weekly's list of the top 150 books of the year. There were only seven books in the Sci-fi/Fantasy category, so I'm pretty flattered by that.

Item 3) Name of the Wind was also named one of the top ten Fantasy/Sci-fi books of the year by Amazon.

Item 4) Name of the Wind is the only fantasy novel to make it onto both of those lists.

Item 4-a (corollary) I rock the house. And, by virtue of association, so do you.

Lastly, because the blog has been getting swamped with spam advertising comments, you now have to do one of those mildly irritating security countermeasures in order to leave a comment. Please don't let this dissuade you from making your usual witticisms. I crave them, and if they are not forthcoming, I may curl into a wretched emo ball and weep piteously.

Later,

pat

Now THAT is the funniest Halloween costume I've seen this year! And to have a partner willing to go as Potter makes it even better.

And when, when, oh when can we expect an audio version of Name Of The Wind? If your book is making all these top 10 lists and winning awards, why can't they do a nice audio version?

Keep the spam filter thingy. Keeps the spammers out but lets the crazies in.

That's a hilarious costume and a cute accomplice! Though, I confess, I've read some, umm, detailed fanfics and it would take a lot to make one of those authors blush. Of course, now you have me thinking what such things could be!

Congratulations on having NotW making the lists! :)

Oh, Pat, Pat, Pat. You should know that NOTHING makes fanfic authors blush. Um. Not that I would know, or anything....

I laughed perhaps a little too hard at those costumes. I think it may even be a reason to turn your name into a verb. You totally Rothfussed Halloween. What does that mean? Well, obviously, if you don't already know, then it would do no good to explain it.

The fact that Sarah dressed up as Potter for Halloween makes you one of the luckiest guys I know, too.

Awesome costumes! I imagine you had a great time "playing" that role. :)

On other notes, it was great seeing you at WFC last week. Kelly and I both wish we'd had more chance to just hang out with you. I guess we'll have to wait until GenCon (or perhaps WisCon).

And do you still have a LJ page?

Best costume ever! Sarah is such a good sport!

Congrats on being on some of the "Best of 2007" lists.
I think I speak for everyone here when I share that NOTW should be at the top of all the lists!

Major Sheep: That is excellent. Maybe if we all started using it? That was a totally Rothfuss comment!

Hey Pat thanks for turning me on to Neil Gaiman. I just finished American Gods and now I'm hooked. I seriously had run out of books to read and there really is some crap out there. If you know of any dark fantasy/science fiction with an anti-hero post the author.
thanks,
Chris
p.s. Hurry up on that second book!!!

Wow. That just blows my mind that someone has read my stuff but not read Gaiman yet. Surreal....

But I'm glad you're digging his stuff. My favorite is Neverwhere, but my girlfriend likes Stardust more. Both are phenominal books though...

Hats off to you for your costume, Pat! Wish I would have thought of it myself, but oh well. I'll do it next year and say it's an original idea ;)

Good job with your lady friend, you guys looked like you had a blast!

(I'm with you, Neverwhere is Gaiman's best work)

Your costumes are made of win. You would have fit right in at Wrockstock Spooktacular, where we had Gay Dumbledore AND Grindelwald or however you spell it.

Congrats on the book lists. You deserve it.

I was quite taken by your gay Patrick Rothfuss costume at World Fantasy.. but maybe that's just me!

On a serious note, you really do deserve all the attention NOTW is getting.

What have you done to the Big Bushy Beard?! Ack!

Seriously, though, congrats on the listings! You do indeed rock the house, and probably paper and scissors it, too, but then, nothing beats rock.

1) You are the awesome-est Gay Dumbledore I've ever seen.
2) Congrats on all the rocking of the house!!
3) We rock the house with you? Freaking sweet!
4) Eating fish sticks at your place sounds kinda fun, actually...

Congrats again to everyone's favorite Gay Dumbledore. :D

I loved the costume, and have to agree that it wouldn't have been nearly as genius if Sarah hadn't played along. I hate to think of anything that could make a fanfic author blush, so I'll just move right along...

Congratulations on all the awards! You totally deserve them, and may you get many, many more. And obviously, it takes more than a little security countermeasure to stop us! So now you won't have to cry emo tears. Good for you. :)

Those countermeasures are commonly called "CAPTCHAs", by the way.

"Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart", I believe.

It's broken, though. It says "Word Verification," but... Well. Maybe my vocabulary is just lacking. Have you, with all your Professional Writerly experience, ever seen the word 'fhmplv'?

I don't know how i missed the gay dunbledore news. I guess I thought JK would take a break for a bit. Still it makes for a great costume.

That news of Dumbledore being gay is news to me! Props on the costume! and of course your book, which took me three and a half days to complete. I actually called into work to tell 'em I was "sick". So when do you think you'll turn it into a movie, eh?

Brilliant on the various awards! Mon Congrats! And if it helps, I also awarded The Name of the Wind one of my top ten reads of the past year. Of course, I'm pretty much a nobody, so maybe like three people ever saw that list, but hey! It's another list! Can't wait for the follow-up novel.

And LMAO at "emo ball." Made me think of a scene from some movie in which these furry little beasts rolled up in a ball like pillbugs and scurried away. Was that "Gremlins?"

The costumes were hilarious, and you two look ALMOST as cute as my son looked in his anteater costume. Which means, so cute it's kinda sickening... :)

And kudos on the continuing and well-deserved kudos!
